ABSTRACT

This report documents a full-scale crash test conducted in support of a study to investigate the performance of New Jersey Department of Transportation's (NJDOT) Precast Concrete Curb, Construction Barrier, which will be referred to as portable concrete barrier (PCB) in various configurations. This represents the sixth system as part of this study. The primary objective of this research effort was to evaluate the safety performance of the NJDOT PCB, Type 4 (Alternative B) with a back-side pinned configuration and grouted toes, corresponding connection type C in the 2015 NJDOT Roadway Design Manual. Barrier nos. 1 and 10 were anchored on both sides, and barrier nos. 2 through 9 were anchored only on the back side to the concrete tarmac through the pin anchor recesses with 1-in. (25-mm) diameter by 15-in. (381-mm) long ASTM A36 steel pins inserted into 1Â¼-in. (32-mm) diameter drilled holes in the concrete tarmac. Non-shrink grout wedges were placed at the toe of each barrier segment in every joint between adjacent barrier segments. The barrier was evaluated according to the Test Level 3 (TL-3) criteria set forth in the Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware, Second Edition (MASH 2016). The research study included one full-scale vehicle crash test with a 2270P pickup truck. Following the successful redirection of the pickup truck, the safety performance of the system was determined to be acceptable according to the test designation no. 3-11 evaluation criteria specified in MASH 2016. The 1100C small car crash test was deemed unnecessary due to previous testing. The barrier successfully met MASH 2016 TL-3 criteria. This report is the sixth of nine documents in the nine-test series.
